Wantagh Railroad Complex
The Wantagh Railroad Complex, maintained by the Wantagh Preservation Society, is a fascinating window into early 20th century life on Long Island. This free museum features three historic structures: a beautifully restored 1885 Victorian railroad station, a 1912 parlor car called the "Jamaica" complete with original solarium and cooling systems, and a recreated 1904 post office. Together, these buildings offer families an immersive look at what everyday life was like in Wantagh about 100 years ago. Visitors can explore detailed exhibits and displays inside the railroad station, including a collection of turn-of-the-century photographs, historical memorabilia, and artifacts from Wantagh's past. The ticket booth showcases Emma Whitmore, the first woman to serve as a ticket agent at the station. Inside the Jamaica parlor car, families can see the observation room, bedroom, and dining room, while the post office recreation shows how mail was sorted and the community operated in the early 1900s when Wantagh was primarily a rural farming town. Best of all, there is no admission charge to visit the museum. The Wantagh Preservation Society welcomes families to experience the grounds during any season—from festive holiday displays in winter when Santa waves from the Jamaica to the scenic natural beauty of the grounds in autumn and spring. The society also emphasizes educational opportunities for children to learn about local history. The museum is maintained through memberships to the Wantagh Preservation Society, which range from $15 for individual memberships to $100 for fellow memberships, all supporting the ongoing preservation and educational mission of this important community landmark.

Taste Buds Kitchen Smithtown is a cooking studio on West Main Street where kids and families cook and bake from scratch alongside a chef instructor. Kids and family classes cover ages 2 to 17: caregiver and me classes for ages 2 to 8 (the caregiver's spot is included in the price), family classes for ages 6 to 17 where kids and adults each get a spot at the table, and drop-off kids classes for ages 4 to 17, offered as single sessions or as a weekly series. Kidz Course is an indoor play space on Larkfield Road in East Northport, with an enclosed play area where kids can climb, explore and play. Open play is booked in 90-minute sessions three ways: Stay & Play, where you play alongside your child; Drop & Play, where staff watch your child while you run errands or get to an appointment; and Work & Play, where you work on site while staff supervise the play area. Each open play visit comes with a snack and juice box for kids and coffee for caregivers, and memberships cover unlimited open play during regular hours (drop-off not included). Kidz Course also runs morning toddler classes and after-school classes, a School's Out Series on days off from school (10:00 am to 2:00 pm with pizza lunch, plus before and after care), and private birthday parties with themes like Ninja Kidz obstacle challenges, Kidz Bop, Glam Spa, Slime Time, Music & Motion and Science Kidz. They also bring obstacle course and craft parties to backyards and event spaces. Socks are required, and weekend open play times change week to week, so check their homepage before you go.
Timber Point Golf Course in Great River has three nines, named Red, White and Blue, with a pro shop, a driving range and lessons from teaching pro Ed Sallie. The course has junior golf, leagues and outings, and no one under the age of 5 is permitted on the course.
The 9 at Merrick is a nine-hole, par-36 course of more than 3,200 yards, set just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway and south of Merrick Road, with elevated greens and welcoming fairways. A practice putting green helps players warm up, and the pro shop offers golf equipment and attire along with personal instruction from a certified PGA teaching professional. Merrick is also one of the Golf Channel Academy's locations.
