About

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a magnificent 3,473-acre nature preserve on Long Island that offers families a chance to explore pristine natural habitats and engage in outdoor adventures. As New York's first designated State Park Preserve, it protects diverse ecosystems including rare plants, nesting birds like ospreys, and abundant wildlife such as deer and waterfowl. The preserve features 50 miles of scenic trails perfect for hiking, nature study, and birding, along with the beautiful Connetquot River running through the property. Families can enjoy a variety of activities tailored to different interests and ages. The Long Island Environmental Interpretive Center offers year-round educational programs including Fun for Kids Activities, Family Adventure Programs, and guided nature hikes conducted Wednesday through Sunday. The park also features a historic South Side Sportsmen's Club Main House with docent-led tours available the first Sunday of each month (September-June) from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM and 1:00 PM-3:00 PM. For older children and adults interested in fishing, fly-fishing is available year-round with sessions during morning (8:00 AM-12:00 PM), afternoon (12:00 PM-4:00 PM), and evening hours (Friday-Sunday only, May 9-June 29). Horseback riding is also available on designated bridle paths. Admission is affordable and accessible year-round. Vehicle entrance fees are $8 for cars and $35 for buses, with fees collected on weekends/holidays only during spring and fall, and daily from late May through mid-October. Environmental interpretive programs cost $4 per person, house tours are $4 per person, and fly-fishing group outings are $25 per person for a 4-hour session. An Empire Pass ($80) provides unlimited day-use entry to most New York State Parks. Note that the park is closed Mondays (except holidays), and certain activities like fly-fishing require advance reservations by phone. Plan your visit knowing that as a nature preserve, bicycling, picnicking, and pets are not permitted, keeping the focus on passive outdoor activities. Winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions permit. The park's visitor center, gift shop, and nature center provide additional resources and information. Whether your family is interested in wildlife observation, hiking scenic trails, learning about local ecology, or exploring historic sites, Connetquot River State Park Preserve offers a peaceful retreat and educational opportunities throughout the year.
