About

David Weld Sanctuary is a beautiful 125-acre nature preserve on Long Island's North Shore that offers families an accessible outdoor adventure through diverse habitats shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The sanctuary features 3 miles of hiking trails with just enough elevation change to keep things interesting without being too challenging for young hikers. Families can explore old fields dotted with red cedars, red maple swamps, and towering tulip trees, while enjoying views from a 50-foot bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. The sanctuary is a wonderland for families interested in nature and wildlife observation. Kids can spot seasonal birds and migrating shorebirds, observe bank swallow burrows in the bluff during summer, and search for boulders—some enormous—scattered throughout the woods and along the 1,800 feet of beachfront. The highlight for many families is exploring the kettle hole, a fascinating 60-foot-deep depression formed when a massive block of glacial ice melted in place thousands of years ago. Each season offers unique discoveries for visiting families. Spring brings magnificent tulip tree blooms and Eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies, while autumn transforms the woodlands into a kaleidoscope of fall colors along with impressive waves of migrating birds. Winter offers chances to spot common loons and waterfowl offshore. There is no admission fee to visit, though parking is limited to about six vehicles in the parking lot with no roadside parking available. The sanctuary is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, making it perfect for a half-day family outing. This is an ideal destination for birders, geology enthusiasts, and wildflower lovers of all ages. The Nature Conservancy manages this preserved gift from the Weld family and welcomes families to hike and explore from dawn to dusk along the peaceful trails.
