About

Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge is a 187-acre protected peninsula on Long Island's south fork that offers families an exceptional opportunity to experience diverse natural habitats and observe wildlife in their native environment. Located near Sag Harbor on Jessup's Neck, the refuge features sandy and rocky beaches, wooded bluffs, upland forests, fields, ponds, salt marshes, and a lagoon—creating a rich ecosystem that supports a variety of wildlife throughout the year. Families can explore the refuge through self-guided nature trails, including the popular 1.2-mile Wild Birds Nature Trail that winds through woodland areas and onto the beach, or take a nearly two-mile beach walk along the peninsula. The refuge is an excellent destination for wildlife viewing and photography, with opportunities to observe white-tailed deer, eastern chipmunks, painted turtles, green frogs, songbirds, and osprey. Late October through early April is ideal for watching waterfowl like long-tailed ducks and common goldeneyes, while spring brings migratory songbirds. Summer visitors might spot threatened and endangered species including piping plovers, terns, and sea turtles. There is no admission fee to visit the refuge. The facility is open from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset daily. Families should be aware that public beach access is closed from April 2 through August 31 to protect nesting habitat for endangered and threatened shorebirds. Restrooms are available at the Visitor Contact Station at the start of the trail, and visitors are advised to bring insect repellent during spring and summer months when mosquitoes and flies are prevalent. Important visitor guidelines include staying on marked trails to avoid poison ivy and ticks, refraining from feeding any wildlife (as hand-feeding birds can harm endangered species and attract predators), and keeping pets off the refuge as they disturb wildlife. No pets are allowed on the refuge. This is an ideal destination for families interested in nature education, wildlife observation, and outdoor exploration in a protected natural setting.
