Longwood Pine Barrens State Forest
Longwood Pine Barrens State Forest is a 165-acre natural preserve offering families a chance to experience authentic pine barrens habitat in the heart of Long Island. Located in the Town of Brookhaven west of William Floyd Parkway, this undeveloped property provides a genuine outdoor adventure for families interested in nature exploration and wildlife observation. The property is completely free to visit and open year-round, making it an accessible option for families on any budget. While there are no formal hiking trails or amenities like restrooms or picnic areas, visitors can hike freely throughout the property to explore the diverse ecosystem. A free 3-year Managed Land Access Permit is required to visit—easily obtained through the DEC's online nForm system. Families visiting should expect a rustic, undeveloped natural experience rather than a traditional park setting. The pine barrens habitat is home to diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, red foxes, red-tailed hawks, osprey, turkeys, bald eagles, Eastern box turtles, and various bird species. This is an excellent destination for families interested in wildlife viewing, bird watching, and connecting with nature in its natural state. Roadside parking is available along the access roads, and visitors should be prepared for an outdoor adventure with minimal facilities. The best experience comes from visiting during daylight hours and being prepared with water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear for walking through natural terrain. Families should contact the DEC Region 1 Stony Brook Office at (631) 444-0270 before visiting to ask about current conditions and wildlife viewing opportunities.
