About

Welcome to the Marine Nature Study Area (MNSA), a 52-acre tidal wetland sanctuary in Oceanside that offers families a unique chance to explore one of Long Island's most important ecosystems. Established on Earth Day in 1970, this 'living laboratory' provides an up-close look at salt marsh, estuary, and sand dune habitats without requiring any special experience or equipment. Families can walk the scenic mile-long network of elevated boardwalks and trails, which keep visitors safely above the wetlands while offering excellent opportunities to spot wildlife and learn about coastal ecology. As you explore the preserve, you and your children will encounter diverse wildlife including ospreys, herons, egrets, and the unique diamond-back terrapin. The park's location along Middle Bay and Bedell Creek makes it a prime spot for observing migratory birds traveling the Atlantic Flyway, particularly during migration seasons. The MNSA features a state-of-the-art interpretive center (rebuilt as a model of flood-resilient design following Superstorm Sandy restoration) that helps visitors understand the complex relationships within wetland ecosystems and why these habitats are often called the 'nursery of the sea.' The park is managed by the Town of Hempstead's Department of Conservation and Waterways and is dedicated to education, research, and community enrichment. Families can enjoy observing foundational wetland species like saltmarsh cordgrass while learning about the critical role these ecosystems play in New York's coastal environment. With its accessible boardwalks and educational focus, MNSA is an excellent destination for families interested in nature study, wildlife observation, and environmental education.
