About

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park is a magnificent 400-acre former Gold Coast estate that offers families a unique combination of natural beauty, horticultural excellence, and historic architecture. The property features rolling lawns, diverse gardens, woodlands, and scenic nature walks designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers to create an English park setting. Kids and parents alike will be captivated by the extensive greenhouse collections, including the largest camellia collection in the northeast, plus impressive displays of hibiscus, orchids, succulents, and seasonal flowers. The centerpiece of the park is Coe Hall, a stunning Tudor Revival mansion that offers guided tours from April through September. During these tours, families can step back in time and experience the formal lifestyle of the 1920s, marveling at the craftsmanship, furnishings, paintings, stained glass, and decorative arts throughout the house. Beyond the mansion itself, visitors can explore a variety of gardens, specimen plantings, and charming outbuildings that make this historic site truly special and educational for all ages. A visit to Planting Fields is affordable and flexible for families. Vehicle entrance fees are $8 for cars, with seasonal parking charges ($8) applied weekends and holidays from late April through mid-November. The park is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, while the greenhouses operate Wednesday through Monday from 10 AM to 4 PM (closed Tuesdays). Those planning multiple visits can consider the Empire Pass ($80) for unlimited day-use entry to most New York State Parks. The park welcomes families year-round with special events and educational programs throughout the seasons. The inaugural Branches in Bloom Festival celebrating Arbor Day takes place in late April, and a variety of courses and group tours are available. Note that mountain bikes are not permitted on park trails, but hiking is encouraged. Whether you're interested in botanical exploration, architectural history, or simply enjoying nature, Planting Fields offers something for every family member.
