About

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is an 83-acre historic estate and natural preserve in Oyster Bay that was home to Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. During his presidency, the mansion served as the "Summer White House" and was the focus of international attention. Today, families can explore the beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and natural surroundings that inspired one of America's most popular presidents. The park offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. Families can take guided tours of Theodore Roosevelt's home (tickets required), explore scenic nature trails that wind through forested areas and lead down to a salt marsh and beach with water views, and learn about the dynamic Roosevelt family and their life at Sagamore Hill. The site also offers virtual tours through Google Arts & Culture, educational programs, and park films online, making it accessible to armchair explorers as well. Visitors should plan to spend several hours exploring the grounds and participating in their chosen activities. The site is open to the public with varying access depending on which areas and programs you wish to experience. Dog-friendly visitors are welcome—just be sure to follow the park's guidelines (B.A.R.K. policy). The park also features a bookstore where purchases support interpretive and educational programs. For educators and students, Sagamore Hill offers curriculum-based virtual field trip lesson plans. The site is staffed Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, and park rangers are available to answer questions by phone or email. Whether you're interested in history, nature, hiking, or combining multiple activities, Sagamore Hill provides an educational and inspiring experience for families exploring Long Island's rich heritage.
