About

The William Floyd Estate is a remarkable 613-acre historic property located in Mastic Beach that combines natural beauty with significant American history. This National Park Service site was home to William Floyd, one of four New Yorkers to sign the Declaration of Independence, and his family's story spans 250 years of change and continuity. Families can explore the estate year-round, walking through miles of marked trails across flat terrain, visiting twelve historic outbuildings, and discovering the family cemetery while learning about this important Revolutionary War figure. The estate offers three main marked trails for families of varying fitness levels: the Blue Trail (2.0 miles) along Home Creek through wooded areas, the Red Trail (1.0 mile), and the Yellow Trail (1.5 miles) through fields and woods, plus additional unmarked trails. The grounds are ideal for birding, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and other species are abundant. Year-round, families can spot hawks, owls, and common backyard birds. Dogs are welcome on the property as long as they remain on a leash of 6 feet or shorter. Visitors can tour the beautifully restored Old Mastic House, which offers guided tours on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (through September 27th each year; reopening May 2, 2026). The estate grounds are open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM year-round (closed only on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). There is no admission fee mentioned. Amenities include restrooms and picnic tables near the parking lot, water fountains in the bathroom facilities, and bike racks near the Green Building. Families should bring their own refreshments and insect repellent, as the area has mosquitoes and ticks. The National Park Service regularly offers ranger-led programs and pop-up activities at the estate throughout the year, so families are encouraged to check the calendar before visiting. The estate is currently celebrating its 300th anniversary. Located at 245 Park Drive in Mastic Beach, it's easily accessible by car via the William Floyd Parkway (Route 46) and also reachable by public transportation via Suffolk County bus route S66.
