Williams Ridge Preserve
Williams Ridge Preserve is a beautiful 4.5-acre wooded nature preserve in Lattingtown that offers families a chance to explore restored native habitats and enjoy peaceful walks through nature. Protected in 2022 through a generous donation by the Williams family, this hidden gem features majestic American sycamore, tulip, and oak trees, along with dense rhododendrons and mountain laurel. Families will discover an old stone stairway connecting the lower property to a meadow at the top, plus a historic formal garden being converted into a native planting demonstration area—perfect for kids learning about alternatives to traditional lawns. The preserve's pond is a highlight for young naturalists, home to frogs, muskrats, large-mouth bass, wading birds, and waterfowl. Following habitat restoration work launched in 2023, the lower part of the preserve now features native shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers that attract dragonflies, pollinators, and songbirds—making it an excellent spot for children interested in wildlife observation and nature photography. The variety of habitats and seasonal changes provide year-round discoveries for families exploring the trails. Williams Ridge is managed by the North Shore Land Alliance and is open to visitors at no charge. However, visitors should note that the preserve entrance location may require directions—families are encouraged to call the office at 516-922-1028 before their first visit to ensure they find the correct access point. The preserve welcomes those interested in supporting its maintenance through donations or becoming a 'Friend of Williams Preserve,' with proceeds helping to guarantee accessibility and continued care of this natural community treasure.
