Jane B. Francke Bird Sanctuary
The Jane B. Francke Bird Sanctuary is a cherished 3.8-acre woodland sanctuary located in Brookville, dedicated to preserving natural habitats and wildlife. Given to the Village of Brookville in 1955 as a memorial to Jane B. Francke, a pioneering conservationist and recipient of the Garden Club of America's highest conservation award, this sanctuary serves as a year-round home to dozens of bird species and various wildlife. For over 65 years, the North Country Garden Club has lovingly maintained the sanctuary, ensuring families can experience the beauty of nature in this protected woodland setting. Visiting the Jane B. Francke Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful free activity for families seeking outdoor exploration and nature education. The sanctuary features several walking paths through varied terrain with unusual plants and large trees, allowing visitors to observe birds and wildlife in their natural habitat. Recently, the sanctuary underwent Phase 1 renovations that significantly improved access, including new parking for up to 5 cars, a walk-in keyless pedestrian gate, new fencing, and additional woodland plantings and daffodils throughout the property. The sanctuary is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk, making it an accessible destination for families any time of year. Families visiting with children will appreciate the sanctuary's peaceful natural environment and opportunities for bird watching and wildlife observation. The sanctuary is currently experimenting with allowing leashed dogs, so well-behaved pets can join your family adventure (bags must be provided for cleanup). While some walking paths are still undergoing maintenance as part of Phase 2 renovations planned for the following year, at least one path is open and ready for exploration. This is an ideal spot for families interested in nature, conservation, and teaching children about local ecosystems and bird species.
