About

Shu Swamp Preserve, officially known as Charles T. Church (Shu Swamp), is a magical wooded wetland sanctuary located in Mill Neck on Long Island. The name comes from the old Dutch word 'Sheogh,' meaning 'cascading waters,' and this beautiful preserve truly lives up to its name. Families will discover towering Tulip trees, Red Maples, and Tupelos creating a lush canopy, with Beaver Brook flowing gently through the preserve. The preserve is home to diverse wildlife including Brook trout, wood ducks, river otters, mink, muskrats, and the rare American Brook Lamprey, making it an excellent destination for nature observation and wildlife education. A visit to Shu Swamp offers wonderful seasonal experiences throughout the year. As early as February or March, families can spot abundant Skunk cabbage blooms, followed by an amazing display of spring wildflowers including Marsh Marigold, Spring Beauty, Dwarf Ginseng, and Marsh Violets. Many varieties of ferns add to the verdant landscape in spring and summer. The shallow pond provides excellent opportunities to spot shore birds, giant snapping turtles, and wood ducks nesting in their natural habitat. This is an ideal location for families who want to reconnect with nature and observe Long Island's native flora and fauna. The preserve is open Saturday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to sundown (closing at 5:00 PM in winter and 7:00 PM in spring/summer). Visitors should note that the preserve may close during heavy rain or dangerous storm events. Please be aware that dogs are not allowed, fishing is prohibited, and bicycles are not permitted on the trails. These rules help protect the sensitive wetland ecosystem. The preserve is managed by the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary and offers families an opportunity to explore nature trails and experience the wonder of a pristine Long Island wetland ecosystem.
